Napa River Striper Fishing Report August 2025
If you're chasing striped bass this August, now is the time to hit the Napa River. The bite is heating up—and Axel from Sweeney’s Sports just proved it by limiting out after work using jerkbaits.
🎣 Here’s What’s Working:
Best Lures: Jerkbaits are the top producers right now. Axel's go-tos include the 6th Sense Provoke 106X, Strike King KVD Elite 300, and Rapala Original Floating.
Hot Times: The best action is happening between 7-9 AM and 8–9 PM during an outgoing tide.
Technique: Axel targets submerged trees and shoreline structure from his kayak. He casts toward the bank and retrieves with a triple-jerk motion—similar to largemouth bass techniques.
Rod & Reel Setup:
Primary: Daiwa Regal LT 3000 Reel on a Daiwa Tatula XT Spinning Rod
Backup Combo: Shimano Symetre Spinning Combo with 30 lb braid, direct-tied to the lure
Pro Tip: Don't overthink the leader. Axel is running braid straight to the lure with no issues.
Whether you’re new to striper fishing or want to dial in your evening bite, now’s the time to get out there. Everything Axel used is available at Sweeney’s Sports—stop by, grab the gear, and hit the river!
What’s Biting: Halibut, Rockfish & Lingcod on California’s North Coast (August 2025)
Halibut fishing along California’s North Coast is off to a cautious start this August, but signs of improvement are emerging. While the Pacific halibut bite has been relatively slow across most ports, anglers are beginning to see better action off Trinidad, Crescent City, and Eureka.
North Coast Halibut Update (Trinidad, Crescent City, Eureka):
A few quality Pacific halibut were landed this week, including a 65-pounder.
Eureka boats are seeing gradual improvement, despite wind and swell limiting effort.
Expect a spike in catch rates when conditions calm—especially between Shelter Cove and Crescent City.
Charter Boat Highlights – Emeryville & Beyond:
Fish Emeryville reports consistent halibut success with multiple limits last week.
Combo trips targeting striped bass and halibut are producing well.
Lingcod and rockfish bites are solid, especially when seas are calm.
Conditions & Forecast:
Wind and swell remain the biggest challenge, keeping boats docked across much of the coast.
Anglers should monitor small-craft advisories and weather windows closely.
Outlook: If ocean conditions improve, halibut action is likely to heat up fast.
Sweeney’s Tip of the Week:
Target calm days – halibut success depends heavily on ocean conditions.
Bring a mixed tackle box – rockfish and lingcod are great fallback species.
Stay connected with local charters – boats out of Emeryville and Eureka are your best bet when the weather allows.
