We Used an Underwater Camera to Test a New Crab Snare

Real R&D on Tomales Bay

Out on Tomales Bay, we decided to do something we don’t usually get to do in real time: watch a crab snare work underwater.

This wasn’t just a fishing trip - it was real R&D. We brought along an underwater camera and one of the newest snares we’ve been testing at the shop: the Glider Snare. The goal was simple: see how crabs actually interact with the snare, how quickly they commit, and whether the design does what it claims.

As soon as the camera feed came into view, the answer became obvious.

We spotted a solid Dungeness moving in and feeding right near the snare and watched the moment happen underwater - something most crabbers never get to see.

When it was time, we reeled up and set the snare.

Instant weight.

Moments later, up came a beautiful, legal-sized Dungeness, cleanly snared. The cable did exactly what it was designed to do, and the crab stayed pinned all the way to the surface.

Verdict:

The Glider Snare flat-out works - and seeing it happen underwater removed all the guesswork.

This kind of testing is why we love getting out of the shop and onto the water. Every product we bring in gets used, tested, and proven in real conditions - not just read about on a spec sheet.

If you missed the video, it’s worth watching. Seeing a Dungeness commit to a snare underwater is something else.
