🟢 Napa River: Tight Quarters, Tactical Striper Work
Best Choice: Penn Fierce IV 4000 / 7' Medium
The Napa River is narrow, structure-rich, and full of schoolie stripers. A shorter rod with finesse is key.
Why it works: Light swimbaits, 1/2 oz jigheads, and live bait (like minnows or ghost shrimp) are standard. You don’t need to bomb long casts—just be precise.
Pros: Lightweight, responsive, perfect for shore or kayak anglers.
Cons: Not ideal for trophy stripers or fast-moving tides without careful drag tuning.
👉 Perfect for casual and frequent Napa anglers who want versatility with lighter tackle.

🔵 San Francisco Bay: Deep Currents, Big Fish
Best Choice: Penn Fierce IV 5000 / 8' Medium-Heavy
When fishing from piers or banks around Berkeley, Emeryville, or the South Bay, you'll need more reach and torque.
Why it works: Casting 1–2 oz swimbaits, soaking bait with 3 oz sinkers, and turning fish in current all require backbone.
Pros: Casts far, handles big stripers, built for drift control.
Cons: Heavier setup—not ideal for short sessions or finesse work.
👉 The go-to combo for bay rats chasing keeper stripers and halibut in tidal flow.
🟡 Sacramento River: Long Runs, Heavy Rigs
Best Choice: Penn Fierce IV 5000 / 8' Medium-Heavy (again)
From Rio Vista to Colusa, the Sac demands gear that can cover water and manage large, migrating stripers.
Why it works: Perfect for drifting live minnows, hucking 1.5 oz Rat-L-Traps, or trolling swimbaits along drop-offs.
Pros: Excellent line capacity and drag, suited for fighting upstream fish in current.
Cons: Overkill for schoolies, but still fishable with lighter rigs and leaders.
👉 A one-combo solution for serious river striper chasers.

Shore Tactics: Carolina rigs with 2-4 oz sinkers or hi-low bait rigs
Boat Trolling: Wild Thing and Spro “Golden Boy” lures at 3.8–4.2 MPH on the incoming tide
Most fish are in the 18–24” range, but bigger models are being caught near structure and bridge pilings.
🌉 San Francisco Bay
Halibut may be headlining, but stripers are mixed in strong, especially around Berkeley, Alcatraz, Oyster Point, and the Treasure Island flats.
Hot Bait: Live anchovies or shiners drifted with 3-way rigs
Shore Spots: Point Emery, Berkeley Marina (chunk anchovy or swimbaits)
Pro Tip: Slack tide and 1 hour after the turn have produced the best bite windows
Limits are happening for both species on well-timed drifts — ideal for a combo day.
🟡 Sacramento River
The Sac River spring run is in full swing, with quality stripers being taken from Rio Vista all the way up to Knights Landing.
Top Technique: Drifting live minnows in moderate current
Backup Plan: Troll Rat-L-Traps or big Rapalas along drop-offs
Where to Go: Clarksburg, Freeport, and the Feather confluence are producing
Look for slightly turbid water near structure — stripers are staging and feeding aggressively.
Catch Happy Tip: Use 20 lb braid with a 15–20 lb fluoro leader for the perfect blend of strength and sensitivity across all three regions.
